Definition of Cancer
Cancer is a common term for tumors (neoplasms) characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells are atypical in structure and do not have specialized functions.

They compete with normal cells for nutrients, eventually killing normal tissue. Cancerous, or malignant, tissue can remain localized, invading only neighboring tissue, or can spread to other tissues or organs via the LYMPHATIC SYSTEM or in the blood (i.e.,metastasize). Virtually all tissues and organs are susceptible. Cancer symptoms, which are often nonspecific, include weakness and loss of appetite and weight.

The causes of cancer are thought to include chemical agents that alter the cell's nucleic acids (see the section called DNA repair). Examples of products known to cause cancer include nitrogen mustard, toxic substances, such as asbestos, pollutants, substances in cigarette smoke. Some types of hormonal imbalances possibly brought on by drugs and medication ( e.g., DES ) also cause cancer. Some people are subject to genetic tendencies for certain types of cancer, (e.g. the breast or stomach cancer). Finally, we know that some physical agents such as X rays and radioactivity, and viruses also cause cancer.

Methods of detection include visual observation, palpation, X-ray study, endoscopy, CAT scans, ultrasound, and surgical biopsy. Tumors caught early ( before metastasis ) have the best cure rates. Cancer is traditionally treated by surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Today there are more specific treatments with fewer side effects, such as hormonal products, vaccines, cryosurgery ( freezing the tumor ), and gene therapy. These have been developed to fight against specific cancers or are still under research. The branch of medicine concerned with diagnosis, treatment, and research into the causes of cancer is oncology.

Human beings are exposed to these new chemicals to an increasing extent without realizing their toxic potential. Many chemicals are later found to turn healthy cells into mutated cancer cells. The chemicals do this by altering the DNA of a healthy cell. We know that this is true in many forms of cancer.

NADH in the most important coenzyme, a compound not created by the body, that is used in the energy production of the cell. NADH is as important to energy production, as oxygen and glucose (food). Dr. Birkmayer says
"There are a number of cancer inducing quinones such as cumene. NADH is able to protect the organism from the cancer inducing effect of quinones. Furthermore NADH and NADPH inhibit lipid peroxidation which is induced by cumene hydroperoxide."
