Summary
In every part of the globe, there are continuing research studies about HIV (HTLV-III), a retrovirus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, better known as AIDS. Even with all this research, there still never seems to be enough for what is now called the plague of the 20th century. Some of the research crossed over the Co-E1 / NADH research efforts. This is particular true, since NADH is directly involved in the body's immune system. (See the section called immune system.)

Definition of HIV
HIV, the retrovirus that causes AIDS. HIV was formerly known as HTLV-III. An abbreviation for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

The finding in NADH / HIV research
Research studies reported that HIV infection decreases intra-cellular NAD and its counterpart NADH. This has been shown in tissue culture. It was found the greater the amount of virus present, the lower the intra-cellular pool of NADH. The rapid depletion of NADH causes cell death.

In connection with this observation, a recent publication describes that NAD, the oxidized form of NADH, prevents apoptosis (cell death) in the mouse brain that contains the HIV toxin. The higher the amount of NADH available, the more energy the immune system has to fight the virus.

The immune system uses its NADH, in what is called the metabolic burst (the rate of energy being released). The metabolic burst appears to be one of the initial steps leading to the cell's destruction of a foreign invaders. (See the section called immune system.)

NADH treating AZT damage:
Zidovudine (also known as AZT) is used to treat AIDS / HIV positive patients. Research has shown that 19 days after administration of zidovudine or AZT, the energy producing compartments in the cell change and become abnormal. Less than a month after taking AZT, the cell's mitochondria changes and becomes abnormal. The greatest amount of abnormal cell changes occurs in the muscle tissue cells.

Furthermore, it was found that the NADH cytochrome C reductase, the key enzyme in cell energy production, was significantly decreased when taking AZT. As AZT is a DNA chain terminator it acts as a muscle toxin (or poison).

It will take time for additional clinical research studies to confirm the initial findings. What is needed is additional studies on more AIDS / HIV positive patients taking AZT over a longer period of time. With the work done to date, science could clinically defend:

that the NADH coenzyme protects, repairs and is often able to correct the AZT induced damages to the energy producing compartments of the cell, called the mitochondria.

In other words, by taking the Co-E1 / NADH while being treated with AZT, one could anticipate a near normal energy production by the cell. We know NADH repairs DNA and cell damage. NADH should repair the damages caused by AZT. Also, the higher the amount of NADH available, the more energy the immune system has to fight the virus. All around, NADH is believed to help the AIDS / HIV and the AZT induced condition. You can wait for the clinical studies which will be printed here when they are published but why wait? if you know AZT is being administered? The HIV positive patients have everything to gain and nothing to lose taking NADH.
