When was NADH discovered?
. . . to the previous page

a microscopeWhat took so long for science to discover NADH? How was it discovered? To answer these and many more questions like them, we'll need to use the analogy of a car engine.

By using a car engine as a reference to understand biochemistry, it was the discovery of the combustion engine that compares to the discovery of cellular respiration.

Knowledge that a spark exists to ignite fuel & air (glucose & oxygen) in the cellular engine, is the discovery of NADH, as a coenzyme. That discovery took place in 1934.

Inside the engine, the preparation of the fuel & the removal of exhaust in words of biochemistry is called the Krebs Cycle. Knowledge about how, when, & where the spark burns the fuel & air, is the discovery of the electronic transport chain. Providing a place where anyone can buy new spark plugs and put them into the cellular engine is Dr. Birkmayer's work with NADH. Dr. Birkmayer's created the NADH dietary supplement called Co-E1.

Discovery timeline of events

nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD):
This was discovered in 1934 by Dr. Kaplan, an American scientist who found that NADH, the abbreviation for the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide plays an essential role in the energy production of cells. (
7 )

Krebs cycle also called the citric acid cycle:
The Krebs Cycle, also called the citric acid cycle, is named in honor of Sir Hans Krebs of Oxford University, England. He was awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize for his work. His work provided the explanations that help clarify the sequence of chemical reactions happening within the citric acid cycle. He discovered that these reactions are a major source of energy in living organisms.

electron transport chain:
In 1961, an American biochemist, Albert Lehninger, discovered that the citric acid cycle and the electron-transfer chain of enzymes (where 1 NADH makes 3 ATPs) are located within each cell’s mitochondria. And each cell has many mitochondrion power plants that produce an energy output which can be measured.

New NADH can replace the body's missing NADH
Science searching for solutionsFrom 1985 to today, Dr. Georg Birkmayer has been researching and testing the therapeutic potential of NADH.(
8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 ) A stable, oral form of NADH was developed by Dr. Birkmayer. Not one clinical study administrator has observed an unexpected adverse reaction in the people who have participated in NADH research. These people received a stable, oral form of NADH as a nutritional dietary supplement.

Public learns of NADH:
This really surprised me. I went back to my old high school biology books and found them full of information about NADH. They tell the story of NADH, as a biochemistry fact and not as some miracle medicine that produces new energy within in the body.

Technology:
It is recent technology advancements that enabled the successful, low cost production of NADH tablets. Only a short time ago, NADH cost tens times more to administer then it costs today. Many have tried to capture a stable form of NADH and have failed. It's only Dr. Birkmayer's new patented process which has been successful at capturing stable, active NADH. Birkmayer distributes the NADH supplements under the product named Co-E1.
