| The heat from these engines . . . to the previous page The cell's power plant is the mitochondria. In each power plant, there are many engines producing energy. Fuel & air fill each engine's cylinder and is ignited. Once ignited, the fuel burns, creating the power to turn the wheels. The heat from these engines is called body heat.
There are many things that can go wrong inside one of these complex engines. Mother nature is amazing. These engines have the ability to self correct & self repair many of the things that break. I would love to have a car that has a self correcting & self repairing engine! The cell needs an opportunity and occasionally a little help to perform its repair job. Speaking of self repairing, if the pistons in the above picture are out of sync, use the back arrow on the title bar (or back up one page) and then return here (using the forward arrow.) The pistons will self correct and synchronize with each other. Keeping with our analogy -- each cell is a city. Each city has many mitochondrion power plants. Each power plant has many engines, and each engine has many pistons. Remember, these are only analogies. They don't exist as cities or power plants. Biochemistry has many other names for these working parts. The analogies help explain the complex relationships among the different working parts. . . . continued on the next page |
