and Sleep Deprivation Press Release Reprint: Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Sleep-Wake Disorder Center, New York Presbyterian Hospital - June 2000 Results of this study is expected in early 2001.. This study is designed to expand the credibility of ENADAlert®. Researchers at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division Test nutritional supplement to combat effects of sleep deprivation Volunteer Subjects Sought for Study White Plains, NY (June 2, 2000) The Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains is conducting a study to determine if a specific nutritional supplement will promote alertness and concentration in healthy individuals who have been deprived of sleep. Previously published clinical trials found the supplement, trademarked Co-E1®, to be four times more effective than a placebo in increasing energy and mental alertness in subjects suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.Dr. Margaret Moline, senior research associate in psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, is the principal investigator of the Co-E1 study. "Sleep deprivation is reaching epidemic proportions, interfering with the productivity of 50% of the national work force," states Dr. Moline. "If this nutritional supplement can help combat the effects of sleep deprivation," she believes, "It may have important future applications in helping those who are affected by jet lag or lack of sleep to perform at their best." The study, funded by Menuco Corp.of New York, NY and Birkmayer Laboratories in Vienna, Austria, will measure changes in a variety of cognitive functions, including alertness, problem solving, visual perception, and reaction time. Volunteers for the study will have four visits to the Westchester Divisions sleep research laboratory for a four to five week period. Two of these visits will be overnight monitored stays in comfortable bedrooms. Those eligible to participate in the study must be healthy adults on no regular medication, between the ages of 40 and 60.
